You Can Turn It Around by spreading good news!
0Are you tired of turning on the news and every story is negative? If there was no bad news I don’t think they would report anything! The news reports are filled with who has been shot, robbed, how high the unemployment rate is etc, etc. Every blue moon they might report something positive but it’s as if good news does not sell. Could it be possible that nothing good is going on? Like in all situations bad news always over shadows good. The 10% of the bad always seems to overshadow the 90% of the good. U Can Turn It Around by highlighting people that are doing good works. Let’s face it all the bad people get all the attention. If you see a good kid give them a high five. Use your Facebook or twitter feed to shine the light on some person or organization that is doing good in the hood.
The art featured in this post was done by one of Mrs. Povsner’s students. See how easy it is to spread some good news!
U Can Turn It Around by surrounding a child in a positive environment!
0Many children are surrounded in negative environments and do not have the coping skills to be able to survive. This is especially true in many urban areas that are overcome with drugs and crime. Some children are able to be saved because of the safe havens that they find in the forms of schools, community centers or someone that is simply concerned about their well being. In an effort to turn our nations children around we must work to create positive activities and places that provide our children with the fuel for success that they need. Many children simply don’t have positive home lives and families to uplift and support them. U Can Turn It Around by creating positive pockets within the chaos!
U Can Turn It Around by having time for the youth!
0We live in a world of busy schedules. There is something to do at every moment and turn of the day. Most people say that there is not enough time in the day to do all that they have to do. Sometimes I think that we are doing too much. If we are so busy in the rat race do we have time for the things that truly matter? I hear a lot of things in the line of work that I am in. Sometimes the things I hear are good and at other times they are bad. One of the worst things that I hear on a normal basis from parents is that I don’t have time to talk to your teacher. This is normally what is said when a child is in trouble and an instructor wants to talk to the parent. I’m sure that parents get tired of hearing bad news about children likewise I’m sure teachers get tired of having to share bad news but to let a child know that you don’t have time to talk about the problem is not the right message to send. This is especially disturbing to hear when many politicians and parents are pushing to have students spend more time with people who they don’t have time to talk to. Upon further examination I noticed that the same people who don’t have time to talk to teachers about behavior don’t have time to pick up a report card, don’t have time to attend an assembly, and don’t have time to attend any social functions during the course of a school year. What kind of message does this send to a child? I have had children ask for their report cards and tell me that their parents aren’t coming because they told them I don’t have the time. How sad this is. If we are going to scream that it takes a village to raise a child please make sure all of the villagers are contributing especially the ones who have children. If you don’t have time for your own children someone else will and the things that they may be exposed to may not be so good. U Can Turn it Around by having time for the youth!
U Can Turn It Around with a positive attitude!
0We live in very volatile times. Financially the country is up in arms and it seems like there is a black cloud over the the world. All is not lost! Even though times are hard and some might not know where their next paycheck is coming from or if they will have one at all there is still hope. Adults are not the only people who feel like they are in hopeless situations. Most children depend on adults and if things are not right with the adult the family often suffers as well. You Can Turn it Around with a positive attitude. Put a smile on your face when you are in the presence of a child and if they seem down and out take the time to encourage them. A kind word or smile can brighten someone’s day. Remember U Can Turn It Around!
Turn It Around through teaching.
0If you call someone ignorant they typically get upset but it simply means you lack knowledge or experience in a particular subject or area. Working in the educational field I experience many different situations on a day to day basis. I’m never surprised when I encounter a student who does not understand something that I take for granted. Today two students got into a fight and caused a major disruption which included a fist fight. Now normally you would ask them don’t you two know any better? Don’t you know that fighting would create chaos especially in school and that its not the way to settle a dispute? If I assumed the answer was yes I would be fooling myself so I decided to use it as a teaching moment. I gathered some handouts about conflict resolution and sat down with the students to talk about solving their problems peacefully and afterwards they realized that it was not the appropriate way to solve the problem and that it was not the most expedient. Did my little exercise mean that these students will never get into a scuffle again? NO, but turning someone around can be easy as teaching them a better way!

Turning it around through creativity!
0Today there are many outlets for today’s youth to express themselves. There is a creative genius inside of all of us we just have to learn how to tap into it. Warren Alexander is a young man that has used his creativity to steer clear of the negative things that many youth fall victim to.
